Joe Burke Memorial Walk

The Joe Burke Memorial Walk takes place on Saturday 21st May at 2.30pm. The walk commences from the roundabout with the dedication of a seat to Joe by Seamus Healy and the Marlfield Village Committee. The Village Committee will lead the walk from the roundabout to Marlfield Lake and then to St Patrick’s Chapel and back by the sunken fence to the walk start. There will be a full explanation of all the different village projects and the history attaching to them. Marlfield has been settled for over three thousand years and excavations have confirmed this. The great abbey of Inislounaght of which today there is little trace and its role in defining today’s village are part of the history which will be highlighted. Marlfield Lake which is one of the village main attractions has a special place and its role in industry and environment are part of the walk. Please come for a lovely evening of community remembrance and information all for free. The walk will take about 2 hours and a decent pair of walking shoes is advised. More details from any of the committee or call mobile no.0862937220.

Condolences

Marlfield Village committee extend their condolences to Jimmy Cronin and his family on the recent death of Jimmy’s brother Peter. To all the Cronin family our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.

Wild Flower Garden

The work at the roundabout is the relocated wild flower garden. The original area chosen was not suitable due to shading by the trees. The new location has been outlined and the bed will be in the hollow where the dead tree once stood. Clay has been sourced and the outlines of the oval bed is dug ready for seeding this week .When seeded and ready a will fence will be woven as a means of protecting the bed from animal and human until the flowers are well established.

Welcome: We welcome into the Christian Faith Community of St. Mary’s, Kai Patrick Keane, who was christened last weekend. We congratulate his parents, Andrew and Taylor, godparents, grandparents and extended family. We also welcome Kara Noonan, we congratulate her parents Paul and Amy, godparents, grandparents and extended family. Confirmation 2016: Last Sunday was a wonderful day for our Parish. We congratulate and welcome into our faith—community of St Mary’s the young boys and girls who received the Sacrament of Confirmation. We thank all who helped in any way. Special thanks to our Folk Choir who sang so beautifully. We pray that as these young boys and girls begin their journey into their teenage years and secondary school that their faith will deepen and that they will gain strength and encouragement by actively witnessing and living out their faith and relationship with Jesus.

Collection for the Ukrainian people: Due to the particularly grave situation facing the Ukrainian people, the Holy Father has wished to draw the attention of the faithful to the tragic consequences of the ongoing conflict. For this reason, he announced that a special humanitarian initiative will be implemented by means of a collection to be held throughout Europe to aid the Ukrainian people. This collection will be taken up at all Masses in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May 2016.

Presently there are approximately 3 million people living in conditions of extreme hardship in those regions most affected by the conflict. Most of these are elderly residents who were unable to leave the combat zone. Regarding housing, from 12,000 to 15,000 homes have been damaged, and more that 1,000 completely destroyed. The situation will be particularly dire during autumn and winter due to severe weather.

Birthday Wishes: Birthday wishes are extended this week to Joseph James, one of our Altar Boys. We wish Joseph a future full of health and vitality and we thank him for his dedication and enthusiasm as a member of our Altar Services team.

We extend birthday wishes also to Paddy Millea who celebrated a significant milestone on his life’s journey. We wish Paddy many more years of health, happiness and involvement with the business life of Irishtown.

Conveyors of Mercy
As well as the feast of the Ascension, today is World Communications Day 2016. This year’s theme is ‘Communication and Mercy: A Fruitful Encounter’. The theme was chosen to coincide with the Holy Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis to highlight the mercy of God. In his message for the 50th World Communications Day, Pope Francis talks about how our every word and gesture should express God’s compassion, tenderness and forgiveness. ‘If our hearts and actions are inspired by charity, by divine love, then our communication will be touched by God’s own power. I would like to invite all people of good will to rediscover the power of mercy to heal wounded relationships and to restore peace and harmony to families and communities. ‘He also highlights the importance of technology and social media as tools of communication, which must be used responsibly. ‘The digital world is a public square, a meeting-place where we can either encourage or demean one another, engage in a meaningful discussion or unfair attacks. The internet can be used wisely to build a society which is healthy and open to sharing.’
It is fitting that this day coincides with the Feast of the Ascension. When Jesus was lifted up to heaven, he entrusted his disciples with the important task of preaching forgiveness to all the nations. ‘The Church’s words and actions are all meant to convey mercy, to touch people’s hearts and to sustain them on their
journey to that fullness of life which Jesus Christ was sent by the Father to bring to all.’Pope Francis’
message for the 50th World Communications Day Tríona Doherty

Catching Fire
Unless the eye catch fire, The God will not be seen.
Unless the ear catch fire, The God will not be heard.
Unless the tongue catch fire, The God will not be named.
Unless the heart catch fire, The God will not be loved.
Unless the mind catch fire, The God will not be known.
from ‘Pentecost’ by William Blake
The arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was by no means a quiet or gentle event. First there was a powerful wind from heaven – so loud it filled not just the room the apostles were in, but the whole house. Tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, and they suddenly began to speak in foreign languages as they were ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’.
It must have been a chaotic, intense scene.
The poem ‘Pentecost’ by 19th century poet William Blake captures some of the power of the scene, with its repetition of the phrase ‘catch fire’. When a piece of news or gossip gets around quickly, we say it ‘spreads like wildfire’. By its very nature, fire jumps from one things
another, burning more intensely the more it spreads. The symbol of tongues of fire is apt, then. The arrival of the Holy Spirit propels the apostles from the room where they were huddled out into the street. They simply cannot contain themselves as they begin to preach and to spread the Good News far and wide – like wildfire.

COME AND PRAY A WHILE
Next Sunday, 29 May, is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ – Corpus Christi. As a way of celebrating this gift in our lives, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 12.30pm Mass until 6pm with Benediction. We are also inviting many of the children who recently made they First Holy Communion to join us from abut 5.30pm with a small procession around the church.
Exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is not only a very old devotion in our Church, but one that highlights the fundamental
mystery of the Holy Eucharist– that our Lord is truly present, body and blood, soul and divinity in the Blessed Sacrament.  In his 1980
Holy Thursday letter to priests, Dominicae cenae, Pope John Paul II wrote, “Since the
Eucharistic mystery was instituted out of love, and makes Christ sacramentally present, it is worthy of thanksgiving and worship.  And this worship must be prominent in all our
encounters with the Blessed Sacrament…”
While emphasizing the importance of the Mass, the Holy Father then recommends various forms of Eucharistic devotion:  personal prayer and periods of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, exposition and benediction, Forty Hours devotion, Eucharistic processions,
Eucharistic Congresses, and a special observance of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.  All of these devotions which focus on the Blessed Sacrament aid in our spiritual union with our Lord.  As Jesus said, “I  myself am the Bread of Life.  No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry, no one who believes in me shall ever thirst” (John 6:35).
We invite as many as possible to come and pray a while and be part of this great
tradition next Sunday afternoon.
