The Baptism of the Lord
How can we enter into the mystery of Jesus’ humble self-abasement and Baptism? Gregory of Nazianzus, a fourth-century Church father tells us: ‘Let us be buried with Christ by Baptism to rise with him; let us go down with him to be raised with him; and let us rise with him to be glorified with him.’ Do you want to see changes in your life? And do you want to become a more effective instrument of the Gospel? Examine Jesus’ humility and ask the Holy Spirit to forge this same attitude in your heart. As you do, heaven will open for you as well. The Lord is ever ready to renew us in his Spirit and to anoint us for mission. We are called to be ‘light’ and ‘salt’ to those around us. The Lord wants his love and truth to shine through us that others may see the goodness and truth of God’s message of salvation. Ask the Lord to fill you with his Holy Spirit that you may radiate the joy of the Gospel to those around you.
‘Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit and inflame my heart with the joy of the Gospel. May I find joy in seeking to please you just as you found joy in seeking to please your Father’. Don Schwager

Message from Pope Francis for the 25th World Day of the Sick 2017.
Dear Brothers and Sisters, On 11th February next, the Twenty-fifth World Day of the Sick will be celebrated throughout the Church and in a special way at Lourdes.  The theme of this year’s celebration is “Amazement at what God has accomplished: ‘The Almighty has done great things for me…. (Lk 1:49).
Instituted by my predecessor Saint John Paul II in 1992, and first celebrated at Lourdes on 11 February 1993, this Day is an opportunity to reflect in particular on the needs of the sick and, more generally, of all those who
suffer.  It is also an occasion for those who generously assist the sick, beginning with family members, health workers and volunteers, to give thanks for their God-given vocation of accompanying our infirm brothers and sisters.
This celebration likewise gives the Church renewed spiritual energy for carrying out ever more fully that fundamental part of her mission which includes serving the poor, the infirm the suffering, the outcast and the marginalized
(cf. JOHN PAUL II, Motu Proprio Dolentium Hominum, 11 February 1985).

Dear brothers and sisters – the sick, healthcare workers and volunteers – I ask you to join me in praying to Mary.  May her maternal intercession sustain and accompany our faith, and obtain for us from Christ her Son hope along our journey of healing and of health, a sense of fraternity and responsibility, a commitment to integral human development and the joy of feeling gratitude whenever God amazes us by his fidelity and his mercy. With the assurance of a constant remembrance in my prayers, I cordially impart to all of you my Apostolic Blessing.
Pope Francis

AGM

18th January 2017

The Annual General Meeting of the CACGA takes place on Wednesday night the 18th January 2017 in the Community Hall at the rear of St Oliver’s Church commencing at 7.30pm and finish at 9.30pm.  The membership fees will also be due on or before the night and each member needs to attend to sign their membership form which will be at the meeting. Membership fees are the same as last year and the committee request that the correct amount of money be brought to the meeting as the management of change can be difficult.  Last year collection of membership presented some difficulties with members digging their plots and no fee paid. Payment of fees includes insurance and it is vital that fees are paid first before any work takes place on your plot. Each year we have some plot holders giving up membership and many more wanting to join and management of the waiting list is a task which requires the cooperation of all members. If you are not renewing your membership please let the committee know.  Important please note if after the AGM if the licence agreement is not immediately renewed the plot will be relet at the next committee meeting.

Bishop Cullinan visits Rome (exerpts from Waterford&Lismore Web pages)
Bishop Cullinan is now on a ten day visit to Rome called ‘Ad Limina’ that takes place every ten years for the Irish Bishops.  They will meet Pope Francis on Friday 20th January, but in the meantime, they will be discussing with various different agencies, what is happening in their various dioceses.
The Bishops arrived to Rome early last Saturday morning, and celebrated Mass in the Irish College. On Monday 16th January, Bishop Cullinan attended meetings at the Congregation for Consecrated Life. The afternoon saw a meeting at the Dicastery for laity and family life. Another meeting was held at Council for protection of Minors. Tuesday 17th January began with Prayer and Mass at 7.15am followed by a move to the Congregation of Bishops for a discussion about a long term strategy for evangelization in Ireland. Then on to the Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith with Cardinal Muller. In the afternoon a meeting was held with the council for new evangelization. There were lots of news ideas, and some are already in place in this Diocese e.g. Pilgrimages, 24 hours for the Lord, Lectio Divina, Workshops relating to Faith etc.
We pray for the success of this visit and send our prayers to Bishop Cullinan.

Catholic Schools Week is an annual all-Ireland celebration which invites schools to give expression in an exceptional way to the ethos of Catholic education.  It acknowledges the tremendous contribution that our Catholic primary and post-primary schools make, not just to Irish society, but to the mission of the Church.
This year’s theme, ‘Catholic schools: Learning with Pope Francis to care for our common home’ has been informed by Laudato Si’, the 2015 encyclical by Pope Francis on care for our common home.
As well as our regular 11am Mass goers, the liturgy for this year’s opening Mass for Catholic Schools Week will be enhanced by the participation of students from our local schools. Catholic Schools Week will take place from 29th January to 4th February.

Planting

The Marlfield Village Committee has taken delivery of this year’s supply of primroses and we propose to plant a number of strips on the roundabout in the centre of the road beyond the Hurling Grounds. The design has yet to be finalised but it will be panels which will show off the varied colours as an introduction to our fair village. We also intend to plant the high bed at the cross corner with wall flowers and sweet William and tidy up the existing area.

Open Meeting

Marlfield Village invites all residents to an open meeting on Monday night the 6th February at 8pm to discuss how to enhance our lovely village. We have many assets and potentials which need your input and ideas to develop a plan of action. The Clonmel Borough Council will provide the professional assistance to make it possible but first we need to tell them what our hopes and ideas are. The meeting takes place in Marlfield Chapel and everyone is welcome and can contact any of the committee or call 08762937220 for more details.

Disabled parking area

We have received word from the Chairman of Tipperary Co Council Cllr Siobhán Ambrose that the Marlfield Village request for a marked walking pathway similar to the bypass and a dedicated disabled handicapped parking bay will be on the Council work plan for this year at Marlfield Lake. This is very good news and the village committee thanks all the councillors who made representation on our behalf for this very necessary safety measure.

Excerpt from a Speech by Pope Francis
And remember that life is a walk, walk always, seeking God. Walk steady, tireless and courageous. Something is missing … and what is missing? Walk with light! And what is light? The Gospel, the word of God. Walk, steady, tireless, courageous and with the light of God’s Word.

Salt and Light
In today’s Gospel we hear of two scenarios where salt is concerned: one is that we are called to be ‘salt of the earth’. What salt does for food, Christians are called to do for the world – to give life ‘taste’. You might recall someone who brought ‘taste’ to your own life, encouraging you on your journey, offering hope, a new insight or project, someone you followed and learned from. What gifts did they bring? The other scenario in the Gospel today is where salt has lost its taste – how can it be restored? You might recall someone you placed great hope in, whether it be a family member, a public figure, a Church leader or politician; someone who had vision and inspired others. Yet the ‘salt’ or the ‘taste’ was lost. We see this all around us in our world, when someone’s potential is lost.
There are many situations in our world today where people’s light is not allowed to shine. It is controlled, hidden, prevented from being used for the benefit of all because of jealousy or perhaps others are afraid of the consequences. Jesus tells us that these lights must shine, for all, and then we can give glory to God in heaven for the fruits it may produce. To help lights shine and to give flavour to the world is our task today. Another way of putting it might be: how are the effects of our encounter with Jesus Christ evident in our lives?
Jane Mellet

Going Deeper
This Sunday we have a third extract from the Sermon on the Mount. It can appear at first glance to be a series of moral statements and rules from Jesus. On closer reflection we can see Jesus’ message here is the call for each of us to ‘go deeper’. The Scribes and the Pharisees followed the letter of the law but without depth. Jesus is clear that he has not come to demolish the law, rather, this whole passage is a call to a more profound reflection on our lives; not ticking boxes but moving towards a deeper change of heart in dealings with others. Jesus gives many examples of how people might do this: warning against the hypocrisy of offering gifts and rituals at the altar when we may have huge anger and resentment towards another. Is the real sacrament not in reconciling that relationship first? Which offering is more life-giving? It is not enough to ‘not murder’, but we must watch our anger which can lead to violence. Jesus is calling on people to watch their thoughts which can lead to serious actions like murder and adultery.
When we encounter Christ, the grace that this experience brings can make us aware of what is not ok in our lives. We are called to a radical conversion, a change of heart. And so we read today’s passage with our hearts, not our heads. It may help to recall a time when you felt God’s grace bringing you to a deeper realisation about your life. Jane Mellet

Lectio Divina

Tipperary County Museum is looking for members of the public to donate or loan postcards and pictures of towns and villages throughout the County for an upcoming exhibition. While we already have a large collection of historic postcards of South Tipperary towns we are seeking historic images of north Tipperary towns and villages. We are also especially interested in images from the period 1970 -2000 for all areas, which would illustrate the more recent changes that have taken place around the County. Any postcards/pictures donated will be added to the Museum collection and any offered on loan will be scanned and returned within a specified time period.
Our exhibition will open in July 2017 and a full programme of events will accompany. Please contact the Museum on museum@tipperarycoco.ie or 07 61 06 5252 to arrange delivery or call in with your Photographs and for further information.

Excerpts from a speech by Pope Francis on 9th February.
Speaking about the contribution of education in sowing hope “Man cannot live without hope, and education is a generator of hope. I am convinced that the young of today need above all this a life that builds the future. Therefore, the true educator is like a father and a mother who transmits a life capable of having a future…..it is
necessary to listen to the young: the ‘work of the ear’. Listen to the young! … “Dear brothers and sisters,
Catholic schools and universities make a great contribution to the mission of the Church when they serve growth in humanity, dialogue and hope”.

Turn the Other Cheek
Today we hear and read one of the most famous passages in the Gospels: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. It is a radical text and not so easy. How can we be expected to love those who have hurt us or done harm to us? Anthony de Mello, an Indian Jesuit who wrote many books on spirituality, spoke often about the concept of ‘loving enemies’. When someone hurts us, when someone triggers emotional pain in us, de Mello suggests that we try to come to the realisation that we are ‘standing before our benefactor’. The situation is a reminder that we are still to grow and we are hurt because someone has not met our expectations. It is these expectations that we must let go of. We can learn from the other who has wronged us: how has this affected me? What do I need to let go of?
The teachings in this passage are radical and go against what we hear around us in our world like calls for retribution and revenge. However Jesus has high expectations of his followers, to go against the grain. Jesus is not encouraging passiveness. He is inviting people to a ‘third way’: to make a non-violent stand when faced with persecution. By ‘offering the other cheek’ we allow for the potential of conversion of the other to a realisation of what they have done. The easy option is to retaliate, to not see our brother or sister standing before us. We can offer them an opportunity to see our own sacred humanity. ‘Loving our enemies’ is a call to constantly move towards restoring relationships, offering mercy and peace. ‘An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind’.Gandhi Jane Mellet

Lent: The season of Lent begins on Wednesday, 1st March and continues until Easter Sunday, 16th April.
Lent is a time of preparation for our celebration of the events of Holy Week, when we commorate what is central to our Christian faith—the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is traditionally a time of prayer, fasting, and good works. In more recent years, one of the most important “good works” is our contributions to Trócaire—an initiative of the Irish Church to help cater for needs in Third World Countries. Trócaire boxes will be available in the Churches from next Sunday. Please take one home with you and place it in a prominent place in your home. Contribute whatever you can to it during Lent, and return to it to the Church during Holy Week.

Lent
The season of Lent begins on Wednesday, 1st March and continues until Easter Sunday, 16th April.
Lent is a time of preparation for our celebration of the events of Holy Week, when we commemorate what is central to our Christian faith—the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and
abstinence and is marked by the blessing and distribution of ashes. Masses in Ss. Peter & Paul’s Parish next Wednesday are – Church of the Resurrection 9.30 am and Ss. Peter & Paul’s Church 1 pm .

Trócaire
Lent is traditionally a time of prayer, fasting, and good works. In more recent years, one of the most important “good works” is our contributions to Trócaire—an initiative of the Irish Church to help cater for needs in Third World Countries. Trócaire boxes are available in the Churches. Please take one home with you and place it in a prominent place in your home.
Contribute whatever you can to it during Lent, and return to it to the Church during Holy Week.

Day of Prayer for Temperance
All of us, ordinary and flawed, have at heart a seemingly boundless longing for fulfilment. On this Day of Prayer for Temperance, we consider Matt Talbot, who had only seven people at his funeral in 1925, but whom hundreds of thousands came to see as a beacon of hope that reflects the struggles addiction can impose on someone’s life. He relied on a higher power that affirmed and accepted him, without preconditions. He made an extraordinary journey from the darkness of excessive addiction to wholeness and the light of holiness. Amidst the anxieties and personal anguishes of his own pain-filled days and nights, he shows us the answer to one of the seven questions that Jesus asks in the Gospel today: ‘Can any of you, for all his worrying, add one single cubit to his span of life?’Matt Talbot could identify with the words of today’s Psalm: ‘In God is my safety and glory, trust him at all times, pour out your hearts before him’. He imbibed the refreshing waters of grace and renewed his life as a heroic witness of the power and presence of God at work within him.
