Village Meeting

A meeting of the Marlfield Village Committee takes place in St Patrick’s Chapel Marlfield on Monday evening the 26th September at 8pm. Please pass on to all committee members.

Final Cut

Unless we have a late burst of growth the last cut for this year to the grass in the burial grounds in Marlfield was carried out on Saturday. The village committee want to thank our voluntary crew of Sean and Johnny for their hard work and regular giving of their time in the maintenance of this special place. We ask all who folk have interred there to attend to their graves and clean and trim as needed. Marlfield burial grounds are very old and as part of the ancient Abbey of Inislounaght include the purported burial place of a crusader. Signage has been erected at the main entrance giving details of this historic place.

Finished

Marlfield has a new marine facility as the boat landing work at Sandybanks is completed and open for use. This is a lovely new piece of work and for lovers of the River Suir a boon.  We look forward to its use next summer when the environmental treasure that is the lovely river Suir is put to use for the enjoyment of everyone. And the good news is that it is all for free.

Up 7 Marks

The annual tidy towns results dropped into the secretary’s letter box during the week and they were very good news. The village increased its marking by a whopping 7 marks and we are very pleased. We went up five marks on how we manage litter and general waste. We held our own and did not slip any marks in any of the eight different categories. We also gained marks on street scape and housing. Well done to all our residents and workers in what has been a most difficult year for our volunteers. Next year’s campaign is in the planning and we will deliver a copy of the adjudicators report to every household for comment. As always we appeal for help in maintaining our lovely village and members to join our committee.

Tidy Towns Competition 2016 – Adjudication Report – Marlfield

Road Works

The road repairs which were underway during the week on the Moore’s Road are completed. The nice new surfaces with their sparkling white lines look very well. The next works we have submitted to the Clonmel Borough Council are a disabled bay marked at the bird feeding area. Also we suggested lined walking route from the Loughtally cross to the Village Street similar to the inner relief road would be a contribution to general safety for pedestrians .The main issue we have identified is the high speed of the vehicle traffic through an urban area. We have requested 4 ramps strategically placed from the Hurling Club corner to the electronic speed panel. In Dungarvan town and Connolly Park Clonmel this issue of speeding has been addressed with multiple speed ramps and it definably works.

Pláisin Gort Na Meala

Dear allotment member a quick reminder to attend to the winter preparation tasks. Please clean off your plot and leave ready for the coming winter. Some plots need a hand as the amount of growth is causing annoyance to all plot holders. The committee at their meeting last week have instructed the officers not to renew the plot of transgressors who fail to maintain their plot weed free and in good heart. Now is the ideal time to dig and turn the soil for the winter’s frosts to cleanse and break down the summer’s growth. No weed killer spraying of any type, at any time and this is an absolute rule, no exceptions.

The date of the Annual General Meeting is booked for St Oliver’s Community Hall on Wednesday evening 18th January at 7.30 pm. If you are considering handing back your allotment let the committee know in good time as there is a waiting list from aspiring members. There is a duty on all plot holders to keep the pathways clean at all times and this means elbow grease with a spade to skin off the growth.

A timely reminder that animals must be on a lead at all times and not allowed to wander onto another members plot. Arrangements will be made with the Co Council for a skip to remove all waste not required for composting off site for disposal. The composting bays are for organic waste generated on site and no waste tourism please.

More details from Chairman Billy O Donoghue or secretary Bernard Lennon on any issue or concerns you want clarified.

Please enter the date of the AGM in your diary for next year , put a reminder in your mobile and pass on to members

MISSION SUNDAY
October is mission month and bishops have welcomed this year’s mission message from Pope Francis: Missionary Church, Witness of Mercy.  There are almost 1,200 Irish missionaries serving throughout the world. The theme for Mission month, and for World Mission Sunday on 23 October, is ‘Every Christian is a missionary’.  This Jubilee Year of Mercy marks the 90th  anniversary of the first World Missionary Day which was approved by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and organised by the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The Irish Bishops ask the faithful to support the country-wide collection for our missionaries which will take place on World Mission Sunday on 23rd October.
For our offertory collection today, any loose money and Mission Envelopes can be placed into the offertory collection for the Missions. Our weekly envelope collections can also be placed in the baskets, and these will remain for the needs of the parish. Again, we are so grateful to all who support the work of the local parish and Mission work church around the world.

We would like to welcome 10 new Altar Servers to our team of servers in the parish who have been working and training hard to prepare to serve the Lord at the Altar.
We thank their families, and the safeguarding team who have assisted and we wish these children every good wish and blessing as they begin this new ministry in their lives.

November Novenas for the Dead
As always, November is the month of remembrance when we recall and pray for all our loved ones gone before us in death. Our Parish has two Holy Soul’s Novenas, beginning in the Church of the Resurrection and the other in Ss. Peter & Paul’s Church towards the end of the month. The Novena in the Church of the Resurrection begins on Tuesday, 1st Nov and continues at the 9.30am (weekdays) or 10.00am (Sundays) Mass each morning until Wednesday, 9th Nov. Please note that when the Church of the Resurrection Novena falls on a Saturday it will take place at the 1pm Mass in Peter & Pauls.
This happens on Sat the 5th November.

Fr Gregory Power:  Last Thursday week, Fr Gregory moved to the Little Sisters retirement home in Ferrybank, Waterford.  We wish Fr Gregory many years of health, happiness and serenity.  Fr Gregory was Parish Priest here in St Mary’s and during that time showed himself to be an exemplary pastor and administrator.  He built up the spiritual fabric of the Parish, founder member of our Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes, still going strong 31 years later.  He was involved in the re-ordering of the Sanctuary in our Church, and set up many of the Parish structures still in existence, the Pastoral Centre being one of them.  On his retirement, 11 years ago, Fr Gregory chose to come to St Mary’s and took up residence in one of the Curates’ houses.  Though “officially” retired, Fr Greg still continued his pastoral and priestly ministry helping  out in St Mary’s and surrounding areas.  He celebrated Mass each day in the Presentation Convent and for that commitment the nuns are eternally grateful, and he will always have a special place of appreciation in their lives.  Fr Greg’s ‘Patriarchal’ presence in our Parish and town during those eleven years was seen as a great example of priestly commitment, dedication and witness and his very presence, wise counsel brought hope and confidence to numerous people.  His presence during those eleven years was a presence of grace to our Parish and testimony to the value of a spiritual focus in life.  Through his prayer, presence and example Fr Greg was the conduit of God’s Mercy, presence and activity in our Parish.  We thank him for his giftedness and presence with us and wish him all the best in this new adventure in life for him.

Pioneers:  The Waterford and Lismore Diocesan Council PTAA will be holding their annual Sunday Dinner and Evening of Music and Dance in The Gold Coast Hotel, Dungarvan on Sunday 13th November.  Dinner at 2pm, dancing til 6.30pm.  Music by Tony Egan.  Tickets €25.  All welcome.  Contact Denis Taylor on 052 6125090.

Wedding Bells:  Congratulations to Darragh Twomey, Kilmacomma who married Maria Coyne in Knockcroghery, Roscommon recently.  Congratulations also to Paul Fitzpatrick, O’Neill Street and Frances Ryan, Doneraile, who were married in Doneraile last week.  We wish the young couples many years of married happiness and togetherness.

Do This In Memory—First Communion Preparation:  Next Sunday, 30th October at the 10.30am Mass, the young children preparing for First Eucharist will be present at our Liturgy.

Church Organ:  The repaired bellows were re-installed in our Organ last Thursday.  It will be great to have our Church Organ back in use again.  The cost of the repair to the bellows was €8000.  If anyone would like to make a contribution it would be greatly appreciated.

Mission Sunday: The Annual Collection for the support of Missionaries and the Mission activity of the Church is being taken up at all Masses this weekend.  Your continued support and generosity is greatly appreciated.

Historic Day:  Wednesday was a historic day in the sporting life of St Mary’s CBS and Gaelscoil.  It was the occasion of the visit of the McCarthy Cup (Senior All-Ireland Hurling), Irish Press Cup (Minor All-Ireland Hurling) and Sean Treacy Cup (Minor County Champions) to the schools.  Seamus Kennedy, member of the winning All-Ireland team is a past pupil of the Gaelscoil.  Gavin Ryan, Captain of the winning All-Ireland Minor Team is son of former principal, Jimmy Ryan.  Mark Keogh, member of the minor All-Ireland team is a past pupil of St Mary’s.  Most of the County Minor Champions are past students of St Mary’s and Gaelscoil.

Icon: Mother of Perpetual Help:  Remember, this famous and revered Icon is coming to our Parish next Thursday evening at 7.30pm when we will have a ceremony and Mass of Welcome.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday we will have various religious and liturgical celebrations.  See flyers at back of Church for details.

Bishop Coming:  On Friday morning 29th October, our Bishop—Bishop Alponsus Cullinan will be chief celebrant at our 10am Mass.

St Mary’s 32nd Annual Lourdes Pilgrimage 2017:  We would like to thank all those who attended this year’s pilgrimage and for making it a memorable and enjoyable occasion.  We look forward to seeing you all again next year.  On Saturday 5th November after the 6.15pm Vigil Mass, the Lourdes Committee will be available in the Crying Room to takes names and deposits for those wishing to travel on our 32nd Annual Pilgrimage to Lourdes.

November Prayer for our Dead
God our Father, Your power brings us to birth, Your providence guides our lives, and by Your command we return to dust. Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, their lives change but do not end. I pray in hope for my family, relatives and friends, and for all the dead known to You alone. In company with Christ, Who died and now lives, may they rejoice in Your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away. Unite us together again in one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen.
