Exam Time
The list is now available at Our Lady’s Altar for those sitting exams over the next few weeks to be included in our prayers. We wish all students the best of luck in their exams. Stay calm and stay focused.
Students Prayer
Dear Lord, I ask you to help me at this stressful time. I feel that so much depends on these exams that I really feel burdened. I feel that in addition to carrying my own burdens, I am carrying the
expectations of so many others – family, friends, and society. Help me to keep calm at this time, so that I can think straight and apply myself to the best of my ability. Let your Spirit help and inspire me, so that I can remember all that I have studied and put together my answers in the best way. Guide me in all my ways, so that I may be fulfilled in you. Amen

Pentecost Sunday
Today, June 4th, Christians around the world observe Pentecost Sunday. In the Christian world, this day signifies the day that Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and the Holy Spirit descended to bless His apostles. The word “Pentecost” refers to the time when the resurrected Christ appeared in front of His apostles and promised the baptism of the Holy Ghost after His ascension, rather than the event itself. As to why the event is called “Pentecost,” the word is taken from the Greek term “pentekoste,” meaning “fiftieth.” It was the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday when Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles.

Distribution of Holy Communion
Following on from suggestions from many parishioners, and in the spirit of reverence when receiving Holy Communion, the Parish Pastoral Council has been looking into the logistics of distribution of Holy Communion during Mass in SS Peter & Paul’s. There have been some concerns raised in relation to safety – especially in the centre of the Church where up to three rows of people form, which causes a lot of congestion and delay during the distribution of the Blessed Sacrament.
After evaluating the situation and discussing the possible options available, we will from next week, ask all parishioners when receiving Holy communion to follow these guidelines, which will be reviewed in a months time: It is hoped that at every Sunday / Holyday Mass that there would be the priest at the Altar, one Extraordinary Minister at Our Lady’s Altar, One at the Sacred heart side and one or more in the
middle of the Church.
If you sit in the main body of the church – please approach either the priest of the Minister from the centre aisle and return to your seat by going along the side aisle in a circular
fashion. This will allow the flow of the line to move smoothly and safely.
From the main body please do not approach a minister from behind – but move forward towards the priest / minister at the front.
If you sit in either the side by Our Lady’s Altar or the Sacred Heart Altar – please go to the ministers on this side only and return in the same aisle.
For those who find it difficult to walk, please remain in your seat and Holy Communion will be brought to you after the distribution has taken pace.
The Parish Council will be reviewing this again in the coming weeks, and are open to any suggestion from parishioners. Our priority is the safety of everyone when moving in the church, and approaching the Blessed Sacrament reverently.
The council thanks everyone for their co-operation and feedback on this matter.

Bank Holiday Masses:
Church of Resurrection: 9.30am
Ss Peter and Paul’s: 1.00pm

Sunday 4th June 2017, 10.30am Mass. Fr Billy Meehan with Philip Dodd and the Coro Travirgolette Choir.

Historic Day in Faith Life of Parish Last Sunday was a historic and symbolic day in the life of our Parish.  We were celebrating Pentecost  –  the feast of the birth and missionary beginning of the Church.  At our 10.30am Mass we welcomed Philip Dodd  –  a mature adult into the Catholic Church.  Philip has been searching for many years.  Last Sunday as he was baptised and welcomed into our Christian-community, it was a day of great joy and fulfilment for Philip.  Philip, a native of Wales often visits Clonmel and stays with Ben and Finola O’Connell, Marlfield Road, who acted as his sponsors last Sunday.  Imelda Kiely, Kilmacomma was Philip’s Spiritual Guide and Faith-Mentor.

A Huge Thank You to the Cor Travirgolette Choir for their beautiful singing at last Sunday’s 10.30am Mass.  It truly was a memorable occasion and we hope to see them again in the future.

Corpus Christi  :  Sunday week next, 18th June is the feast of Corpus Christi.  We will have our Corpus Christi procession after the 6.15pm Vigil Mass.  As Corpus Christi is the last Sunday in the ‘Do this is Memory of Me’ First Communion programme it is hoped that all our First Communion children will be present in their First Communion outfits and be part of our procession.

“You, then, are the body of Christ. Everyone of you is a member of it.”
1 Cor 12:27

Jesus, The Bread of Life
Jesus gives his whole self to us and invites us to a deep union with him. We often imagine God up in the clouds in heaven looking down at us, maybe distant, maybe disconnected. The
Eucharist shows us that God is involved in the messiness of human life, present to us in
Jesus’ body and blood. Bread is nourishing, bread is for life, bread is food for the journey. Jesus is all of these things for us. His blood is a reminder of his death, of the brokenness of this world, of the struggles of people’s lives. Christ invites people to connect their own sufferings with his. Jesus, present with us in all of life, invites us into a deep union with himself. Flesh and blood means the whole person; ‘the living bread’ invites us to an even deeper intimacy. It can be a difficult passage to understand, but perhaps today you might reflect on times you felt sustained by God, strengthened by God through joyful times and sorrowful times. You might also reflect on who has been Jesus for you? Where have you seen Christ in this world, in flesh and blood? Jane Mellet

Joseph Burke Memorial Walks

The Joseph Burke heritage trail walks are taking place on Saturday 1st   July from the Marlfield Hurling Club grounds with 2 different walks.  The Marlfield forest walk is in the woods two kilometres  west of Marlfield Village and the heritage trail walk is in the village from St Patricks Chapel  through the village via the roundabout  to st Patrick’s Well along the pondside. The assembly point for both walks is in the Marlfield Club Grounds which has adequate off road parking for cars. The walks commence at 2pm with bus transport to the start of the different walks and a pick up for the return. Please dress appropriately for the two different types of walks as stout footwear is advised for the forest trails walk. When back at the Marlfield Hurling Club Clubhouse after the walks, the village committee will be serving tea /scones /brack and apple tart for the hungry walkers. There is no charge for this event which is a co-operative effort between Tipperary Co. Council and Marlfield Village Association

Village work teams

We have finished the clean up on the pondside and it is looking very good. Nine fit and eager volunteers made short work of the accumulated leaf mould, weeds, branches and general muck along the walls and the parking bay. The next area on the list is the Loughtally road section which will need similar treatment to both road verges and the footpaths. Monday evening is the work night and we ask volunteers to bring their own hi vis vest, shovel or brush, or clippers and a pair of garden gloves. It is a most enjoyable hour or two working with your neighbours for the good of the little village and the results are immediately visible. More details on our work night from Noel Buckley, Teddy Lee, Kathleen Hogg and Bernie Lennon.

This weekend we remember with fondness Fr. Ray Reidy whose Anniversary Mass will be celebrated at the 7.30pm Mass this Saturday in Ss Peter and Pauls.

Even the Hairs on your Head are Counted

Today’s Gospel is an affirmation for all those who feel persecuted in any way because of their beliefs or
because people are speaking badly about them, or those who feel alienated from their community, their family or even from God. During such times it can be extremely lonely to the point where one can lose their sense of purpose in this world. While we might not want to shout from the rooftops, as Jesus suggests, there is a message here to speak out, to talk it out. Today, spend time on the beautiful words of Jesus in this Gospel – ‘Even the hairs of your head are all counted, so do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows!’ The sparrow, one of the
smallest of birds, is cared for and loved by God. This is a reminder that no matter how insignificant we might feel or how challenging the circumstances get, God is with us, each of us. Once again, we are being told how sacred each and every person is and how much we are loved by God. In his eyes, each of us are precious. Today, recall the times or places where you felt God’s supporting presence.
‘When we travel through those wilderness places of our lives where we feel lost, insecure, lonely,
frustrated, discouraged, or overcome by busyness: Help us to trust in you, God of the journey. When we catch glimpses of the tremendous love you have for us and experience a deep, loving connection with others: Help us to trust in you, God of the journey.’ Joyce Rupp
Jane Mellet

World Day of the Poor Announced by Pope Francis
The first World Day of the Poor will be observed in the universal Church on Sunday 19th November 2017 at the request of Pope Francis. In a special message published recently, Pope Francis explained that at the conclusion of the Jubilee of Mercy, he wanted to offer the Church a World Day of the Poor, “so that throughout the world Christian communities can become an ever greater sign of Christ’s charity for the least and those most in need.” The World Day of the Poor message is entitled, “Let us love, not with words but with deeds”. In the message Pope Francis invites “the whole Church, and men and women of good will everywhere, to turn their gaze on this day to all those who stretch out their hands and plead for our help and solidarity.”

DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION
SS Peter & Paul’s
At the recent meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council, the review of the practice of parishioners receiving Holy Communion in SS Peter & Paul’s Church took place.  Members acknowledged that there was an overwhelming improvement and great feedback from many people in the way parishioners are asked to come up and receive Holy communion.
The council tried a number of ways to improve this over the 4 week period, including signs and announcements which have all helped and remind us of the way to approach at communion time.
We would remind and request that the faithful in the main body of the church to approach the priests / ministers from the centre of the aisle, and go back by the side – thereby keeping the centre area free from being
locked. If seated in Our Lady’s side or the Sacred Heart side, please approach the minister(s) from this side only. Please do not cross over to another side, as ministers will go to areas where the faithful are queuing when their area has been distributed. A recommendation where there are not enough Extraordinary Ministers available, is that they would stand with the priest at the top of the Church by the altar and it is envisaged that the faithful would all come up the main centre aisle and return by the sides. this practice is done well in many other places across the country in similar Church buildings. For any person who cannot easily approach either the priest or minister, please remain in your seat and Holy Communion will be brought to you at your seat. Please let a minister know where possible. The council will review this again at the next meeting, and would strongly encourage any comments or suggestions should be made, preferably in writing, to the Secretary of the Parish Council. We are still hoping more people might apply to become Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and ministers of the word, so we can maintain our highest liturgical standards at every liturgy. The council also discussed a number of initiatives in the parish from September and again, welcome any comments or suggestions.

First Friday Next Friday, 7th July is the First Friday of the month, a day when we bring Holy Communion to the sick and housebound of our parish. Please contact one of the priests or ring the Parish Shop 61 22138 if you or someone you know needs a call.

Divine Mercy Devotions: Friday 7th July at 3pm in SS. Peter and Pauls. Everyone Welcome.

Yearly Boxes of Envelopes:  The boxes which facilitate your weekly contribution to the Parish are now available in the Parish Office in the Church.  Parishioners who many not attend the Church still want to be associated with the Parish and the upkeep of the Church.  Our Church needs a re-painting so there will be some fund-raising events.  The best way of fund-raising is through the weekly envelope.  An added bonus to using the weekly envelope is that for anyone who is a taxpayer and who contributes €250 to the Parish in the year can bring an added bonus to the Parish in that the Revenue Commissioners will donate €67.50 to the Parish.  This scheme does not affect your tax liability in any way.  Application forms can be obtained from Maria in the Parish Office.  Some Parishes in the Diocese have benefitted by €20,000.00 from this scheme.

NEW IN:  Angel and Cherub graveside card holders and cards are available in the Parish Shop in the Crying Room.  Pop in and have a look.

Rest for your souls
Pope Francis had some strong words of advice recently for priests. As he ordained ten men to the priesthood on Good Shepherd Sunday, he said in his homily: ‘A priest who has perhaps studied much theology and has achieved one or two or three advanced degrees, but has not learned to carry the Cross of Christ, is useless: he will be a good academic, a good professor, but not a priest. Please, I ask you in the name of Christ and of the church to be merciful, always: do not saddle the faithful with burdens they cannot carry – nor ought you so burden
yourselves. ‘He must have been thinking of the extract from Matthew’s Gospel that we hear today, where Jesus talks about the exact opposite of laying burdens on people – he promises to take them away, and to lighten our load.
I don’t think Jesus is saying that the Christian life is always going to be easy, that there will not be burdens or crosses to carry, or that we should not hold ourselves to high standards. Rather, he is reminding us that when we find ourselves overburdened – tired, frustrated, afraid, overwhelmed, disheartened – help is at hand. He invites us to come to him, and to unload our troubles onto him. He is a place of rest for our weary souls. With Jesus on board, our minds and hearts will be lighter, and we can get on with our tasks with renewed energy and zeal. Tríona Doherty

‘Life’s tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.’
Benjamin Franklin

The Generous Sower
Can you picture it? I love the image of Jesus sitting in a boat, addressing the crowds on the beach. He
certainly knew how to hold their attention. And he knew they would understand him more clearly if he used the language of stories. Those listening would have been familiar with the cycle of planting seeds and waiting for them to produce a crop. One of the purposes of parables is to challenge the hearers to reflect and respond with faith. So this parable of the sower requires Jesus’ audience to decide what kind of soil they are. There is a message of judgment for those who are hardened like the rocky soil, and a message of hope for those who are receptive like the rich soil.       The figure of the sower is important too. The sower does not confine the seeds to soil that is fertile and ready for growth. Rather, the seeds are scattered everywhere – on the path, patches of rock, and among thorns. Jesus does not discriminate. His love is given out for all. He knows that some of it may be rejected, or accepted only on a superficial level, but he offers it anyway. That offer of love is never withdrawn. It might take a while to bear fruit, but it is always there. ‘Always there are doors that are not closed. Look for the doors that are at least a little bit open, enter and talk about common things and go on. Step by step.’ Pope Francis Tríona Doherty

Changing the world
In 2009, the first Darkness Into Light event in aid of Pieta House took place in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Around 400 people walked the 5km course that year to raise funds for the suicide prevention charity. Fast forward to May this year, and more than 130,000 people took part in 150 Darkness Into Light events across Ireland and worldwide. Many of us will know someone who took part, or we may have got involved ourselves this year. As the crucial
message of hope and solidarity filters out from these events, who knows how many lives have been saved or
transformed over the years? Darkness Into Light is a great example of a movement which has grown from a small seed of an idea into a major force for good. The parable of the mustard seed, which we hear today, shows us that fantastic things can emerge from the most modest of beginnings, ‘the smallest of all seeds’. The disciples who first heard Jesus speak were ordinary people – not the religious leaders of the time or those in positions of power or influence. But they were the seeds from which the Church would grow down through the ages. Each act of kindness or forgiveness, each time we spread the Good News of Jesus in our own way, we are hastening the spread of God’s kingdom. These seeds grow and multiply, and bear abundant fruit even if we cannot always see the results. We can’t change the world in one go – but we can change our world. Tríona Doherty

Turning of the Year

The year has turned towards the fall and the main indicator is the busy sound of the harvesting as the giant machines devour fields of golden grain. The church field was cut, straw gathered and grain removed to storage in a few hours on Saturday evening. It left behind the gorgeous smell of freshly cut straw and a field which had a number one cut.

Village work party

Great progress has been made in the last few weeks on recovering the village environment from the spurt of growth early this year. The footpath along the Marlfield Hurling Club has been given a nice trim and swept. The Pondside road has also had the attention of the shovel, brush and clipper and looking good. The work area for the next few Monday evenings is the road from Patricks Well Cross to the Well and it is all hand on deck. Noel Buckley is co-ordinating the work programme and the working party meet at 7pm at the cross. Bring a hi vis vest, something to work with and a pair of gloves as the nettles are viscous.

Renovations

Work is in full flow at the lodges inside the estate entrance and a full scale sympathetic renovation is planned. The entrance lodges are one of the finest examples of their type in this part of Ireland and when restored will add to the visual ambiance of our fair village.

St Patrick’s Cemetery Mass
Many thanks to all who assisted and prepared for the Mass in St Patrick’s Cemetery last Thursday.
Special thanks to our musicians, Eamon, Maria and Gillian – to John and all the groundsmen who helped set up and
arranged the chairs, and to Luke Sheehan for all his help. Also sincere thanks to our reader, Extraordinary
Ministers, T.J. our server, – and all who held umbrellas for ministers during Holy Communion. Thanks also to the very large crowd who attended and prayed at their loved ones graves.
May they all Rest in Peace.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
Matthew 13:44-52
1. Have you ever found yourself saying ‘that was worth it’ after giving up something (time, pleasure, money, etc.)? What was the treasure that made the sacrifice worthwhile?
2. The ‘kingdom of heaven’ is when God is really the ruler in our life. What treasures have you obtained when you
allow God to be at the centre of your life?
3. In life we gather a lot of things, some good and some bad. The wise person in the kingdom of heaven knows how to sit down and make decisions on what to keep and what to discard. When have you undertaken that kind of discernment? What have you discarded? What have you retained?
