Regional mountaineering Ireland training meeting.
The Peaks Mountaineering Club hosted the Mountaineering Ireland regional meeting on training in the Park Hotel on the 11th January recently and it was a very successful meeting. With over fifty members attending from clubs in Kerry, Cork, Wexford, Limerick, Kilkenny and Tipperary it was very representative of the healthy state of our commitment to hillwalking and mountaineering in the South and South-East. Jane Carney Mountaineering Ireland Trainer gave a power point lecture on different aspects of membership, training and the ethos of mountaineering.

Helen Lawless Access Officer Mountaineering Ireland gave the background to access issues and general mountain conditions. One item which she explained is the new joint structure dealing with these issues in Kerry and how it benefits both the landowner and the mountaineer / hill walker. The Peaks Mountaineering Club thanks everyone who gave of their time and skills to inform and develop our love of mountains. Special mention to Greg Kenny and Michael Tobin for the hard work and commitment that they are giving in training the new Peaks Club mountain leaders at present for our club.

Walks this Sunday were on the Knockmealdown range and a miserable day it was. Nothing would deter the hardy souls in our club and John Morrissey had charge of the early walk which he led from Baylough. Using the east west track John led to the 3rd stream and then handed the baton of leadership to Paul Carroll. Paul with map and compass bravely led up Knockshanhullion in wet and mist but under the careful eye of the master. Finding a sheltered place for a spot of lunch and once fed and watered it was onwards to the Avondhu Way. A bit of nifty navigation soon had the mountaineers into the woods and then using selected tracks and trails it was back to the cars and a quick change into dry clothes.
All walks next week the 28th January are on the Galtee Mountains. Pack maps no 74 and the usual mountaineering gear for day out. The early walk is led by Kevin Bowen. The noon walk is led by Flan Real with William Smyth assisting. Note all walks leave sharp from Eldon’s at the stated time.
