The little plans I tried to carry out have failed O Dear God.

And try again tomorrow.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS
Following on from last years excellent initiative of decorating our Churches at Christmas, our Pope John Paul II students will be involved again in offering poinsettias in memory of a loved one, or for intentions of family and friends, and it will be placed in the sanctuary area to decorate the church for Christmas.
You can call into the parish office (or the sacristy in the Church of the Resurrection) or to one of the students after Mass in the coming weeks, and fill out a card for your intentions. This card is then placed into an individual poinsettia which is ordered by the students and placed in the sanctuary area.
The cost of each poinsettia and intention card is €10 and all proceeds go directly to the Church Renovation Fund and to the Pope John Paul II Award.
Thank you in advance for supporting this idea, and helping decorate our churches for Christmas and also supporting our renovation and award fund.
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes. Charles Swindoll

Mass for the Bereaved
We had our Annual Mass for the Bereaved last Thursday where we remembered all of our loved ones who have gone before us.
We may have inadvertently omitted some names from the list and for that we apologise. One such name we omitted was Tom Pollard who was so involved in many events and fundraisers for SS Peter and Pauls and whose family was present at the Mass. All of our loved ones were included in our prayers on the night and continue to be remembered throughout November.
Our thanks to those involved in organising this special evening of remembrance.
The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living. Marcus Tullius Cicero

Footpath

The sight of concrete being poured and levelled on the footpath extension from the Cahir Road Roundabout for a hundred meters towards the footpath from Patricks Well cross gives all walkers and road users heart. We are hopeful that the gap can be closed in next year’s work programme and look forward to increased pressure from our local co councillors to deliver this long awaited safety measure.

Steady Progress

The unsung heroes are back in action as they tidy, clean and trim and remove the debris from the storm. We have a new Tus worker Vincent Kelly on the Village work programme and he is making steady inroads to the leaf  mountains down the Pond-side. Vincent has a mountainous task ahead of him but with a determination he will prevail.

The Tinsley Entrance

The William Tinsley designed entrance with its twin Doric Lodges has had a full make over by the Mulcahy Construction firm and they have done a master job of work. The repairs to the stone work are excellent and all the refurbishment is of top standard and a fine display of craftsmanship. The repairs to the roadways and general tidy up will be to the village benefit in next year’s tidy town’s competition. This was a win win for our fair village.

The newly refurbished William Tinsley designed Doric lodges

Tree Planting

This is a perfect time for tree planting and the village have a number of trees to plant ASAP. The replacement red white thorn in the circular bed in the Marlfield Estate main entrance is one of the first to be attended to. This will require digging through the hard old entrance surface to ensure the roots get a good grip into the ground for stability. We think this is what happened the previous tree when it appeared to break off in windy weather some time ago.

Village Committee Meeting

A meeting of the Marlfield Village Committee will take place on Monday night the 27th of November in the Marlfield Clubhouse at 8pm. There is a full agenda for the meeting including a discussion on a work programme for Marlfield Chapel to clean up the damage after storm Ophelia. As Christmas is coming we also have to make festive plans and all ideas welcome.

Hedge Cutting

The hedge cutters are giving the Pondside a short trim and sides the provide visibility for motorists and to enable pedestrians step aside for safety. Each year this task is undertaken with the aim of safety and ensuring that the roadside hedge stays strong and intact. The hedge acts as a barrier to wind-blown rubbish and litter entering the waters of the Lake and it is very effective as many bags of litter are removed annually from the hedge.

Table Quiz

The first Marlfield Village table quiz was an outstanding success and the participants and committee enjoyed themselves in this great social occasion. We wish to thank all our sponsors , our workers and a special work of thanks to Michael Carey and his staff for their excellent facilities for what we hope is a repeat event next year.

Hold on to your life, Even if it’s easier to let go.
Hold on to my hand, Even if I’ve gone away from you.

Bambinelli Sunday : 17th December 2017 at 10:30am Mass

For the past several decades, each year on Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, children (and adults) bring their Baby Jesus figures from the crib at their homes to St. Peter’s Square where the Pope will bless both the people and the figurines during the Angelus.

This year we will celebrate “Bambinelli Sunday” at our 10.30am Mass on Sunday 17th November.  All are invited to bring the Baby Jesus figure from their homes to Mass that morning to be blessed.  Families can even make their own “bambinelli” if they want.

A suggestion is, following the blessing, take your “bambinelli” home and place it in a gift box, wrap it, and save it for Christmas.  Let this be the first gift your family opens on Christmas, when together you place your Baby Jesus figure in the crib, and have a home blessing of the Nativity for your whole family.

Tarmac:  During the week, the tarmac on the small car park was repaired.  The damage occurred as a result of the water pipe leading to the furnace collapsed and a new pipe had to be laid.  The entrance to the Parochial House had become very broken and dangerous for people coming from the large car park and entering by the side door.  If anyone would like to make a contribution towards the cost of these necessary repairs, it would be appreciated.  I would like to thank Tom Fennessy for his initiative, energy and dedication in negotiating and overseeing this project.

Sr. de Sales, Presentation Convent

Sr. de Sales, Presentation Convent, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and community last Monday evening.  Sr. de Sales, a native of Portmagee, Kerry spent all of her life in Presentation Convent, Clonmel, except for seven years spent in the Presentation Foundation in America.  De Sales came as a boarder to Clonmel, entered the Convent, and remained there all her life.  Aged 93, De Sales enjoyed good health up to about 12 months ago.  An  inveterate Kerry supporter, she was deeply proud of her Kingdom roots.  A great teacher, she is remembered with affection by all her pupils.  She had a great way with people and could identify children of today with their parents and grandparents.  Possessed of a caring, friendly, outgoing personality, that always saw the positive, she will be missed.  De Sales left an indelible mark on all who came in contact with her.  She was a true visionary, educator and religious person, who understood and lived out the ethos and philosophy of Nano Nagle.  May she rest in peace. †

Active Retirement in Place4u. Re-opening on Thursday the 18th January.

A Joyful  Sunday.  The Third Sunday of Advent is also known as Gaudete Sunday.  The word gaudete  is derived from the Latin words  gaudium,  joy, and gaudeo, to rejoice or be glad.  Gaudete Sunday occurs eight to thirteen days before Christmas, and the nearness of this major feast is reason for great joy. Gaudete is taken from the Entrance Antiphon:  “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.  Indeed, the Lord is near” (Phil 4:4-5).
Advent is a time of joyful expectation and eager preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas.

Congratulations to Nicola Plescach, member of our Children’s Liturgy Team who won a National Letter-writing competition outlining family involvement.  Nicola was interviewed by Ryan Tubridy on his Radio Show last week and people who heard it said Nicola was brilliant.  Nicola qualified as a Nurse this Summer, but is taking a year out to care for her family.  Well done Nicola, you deserve all the good fortune that comes your way in life – a real role-model for young people in today’s Ireland.

Village Name Plates

The maps used in the Griffiths Valuation process carried out in the 1840’s contain many records on what our lovely village was called. There were over 1123 persons resident in 1837 and the streets of Marlfield or Inis Leamhnachta were called, Main Street, Turnpike Road, Church /Chapel Avenue, Cork Road, More’s Road, Pondside. This is a project that will could be progressed in the coming year with name plates in Irish and English tastefully erected in the relevant locations.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there….
~Clement Clarke Moore, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” 1823
Remember, if Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won’t find it under a tree.
Charlotte Carpenter

Crib We invite and encourage you to visit our beautiful crib over the next few weeks. Once again we thank Anthony Lawless for his work and to all who helped put it together.

Message of Crib and Christmas tree
Each year the Christmas Crib and the Christmas tree become a symbol of the compassion of the heavenly Father, and his participation and closeness with humanity that feels it is not abandoned in the night of the times but is visited and accompanied amidst its difficulties. The tree pointing up urges us to stretch out “towards the highest gifts”, and rise above the mist that clouds, to feel how beautiful and joyous it is to be immersed in the light of Christ. In the simplicity of the crib we meet and contemplate the tenderness of God, manifested in that of the Child Jesus.

Marlfield Village AGM

Marlfield Village Annual General Meeting takes place in Marlfield Clubhouse on Monday night the 29th January at 8pm. It is at this meeting an account of the business of the committee is discussed, issues raised and explanations given. Please come along and take part in the work of managing our fair village and have your say. Everyone welcome as this is a public meeting further details 0862937220

This is a project that could be progressed in the coming year with name plates in Irish and English tastefully erected in the relevant locations.

Bottle bank upgrade

The area in which the present bottle bank at Sandybanks is crying out for some sympathetic landscaping and cleaning. There is a proposal to enhance the location with native flowers, bushes and blackberry plants all of which will regenerate naturally and provide food for the native avian species. The new location of the receptacle’s is much more flood proof and some further county Council work is needed on signage and hard standing beforehand.

A Searching God
He came in search of John.
He came in search of baptism.
He came in search of blessing.
He came in search of the Spirit.
He came in search of God’s favour.
He came in search of God’s love.
We know what it is like to search. We yearn for meaning, for love, and our hearts are always searching for God. Today’s first reading from Isaiah speaks of this great thirst: ‘Oh come to the water all you who are thirsty’; ‘Seek the Lord while he is still to be found’. We must seek constantly to bring ourselves into the presence of God, who will give us his blessing and strength for the road ahead.
“You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.”
St Augustine Tríona Doherty

Resolutions to help you have a Spiritually Renewing 2018
Express Gratitude. Meditate Daily.
Connect with Nature Go on retreat.
Set Intentions. Laugh More.
Unleash your Creativity. Speak your truth.
Donate Time/ Money/Energy.
Do Little Acts of Kindness. Practice Hospitality.
Honour the Sacred. Practice Forgiveness.
Love Yourself. Love God.

THE SIGN OF PEACE
The sign of peace is a central part of the preparation of receiving Holy Communion, especially when family and friends are gathered beside us.  The Parish Council suggested last year that when it comes to the sign of peace, that each person should show a sign of peace with which each person is most comfortable. This could be a handshake, a small bow of the head, or raising ones hand and saying ‘peace be with you’ to those beside you. If people have a cold / flu, perhaps we could suggest they choose to the latter.
The HSE say there are currently no warnings about handshaking or contaminations at this time.

PROFESSIONAL BEGGING
We have been made aware by the Gardai that there are known “professional beggars” operating outside our churches and around the town. While this is so sad to see in our society, it is also a sad fact that they are often in groups and organised and that the majority of the time, money given to one person is not necessarily the person who benefits from the generosity of passers-by.
This is widespread in major cities and towns and is growing. The advice is rather than give money, offer a hot drink or food. That way the person themselves is given help directly.
Our Christian call is to help the poor and marginalised in our society, and in conjunction with the agencies who help those in need we can provide practical help. However in the majority of cases in this area, state aid is being provided and some of these people may beg looking only for money.
We would recommend giving help to the St Vincent de Paul, the Clonmel Soup Kitchen or other groups who work directly with those most in need.

Anam Cara Tipperary, an organisation that supports bereaved parents, will hold its next monthly Parent Evening on Monday 15th of January from 7.30pm-9:00pm in the Horse & Jockey Hotel, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Anam Cara Tipperary offers a safe and comfortable setting where you can drop the mask and be yourself among people who understand. This event is open to all bereaved parents
regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death, or whether this was recent or not.

Poinsettias Many thanks again to all who purchased a poinsettia to decorate our churches for the Christmas season. Please feel free to take a plant away with you after Mass today from the back of the church entrances and bring them home or to the cemetery if you wish.

The classes for new bridge players from Sept. to December were a great success and we look forward to meeting these novice players in the clubs during the next few weeks. Monday Morning bridge runs every Monday from 10.00 -12.00 and this has proved  invaluable for all those who want to improve and practise their bridge, as well, of course, as being a wonderful way of spending a Monday morning in mid winter.

Congratulations to the Parents and God Parents.

Come and see Today is the 104th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, and this years theme is Welcoming, protecting, promoting and integrating migrants and refugees. In his message to mark the day, Pope Francis spoke of our responsibility, as individuals, communities and Church, to welcome everyone, particularly those who have been forced to leave their home in search of a better future.
Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age. This is a great responsibility, which the Church intends to share with all believers and men and women of good will, who are called to respond to the many challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their own abilities.
Pope Francis has spoken often of our brotherly responsibility towards our fellow human beings, and how our welcome ought to be a response to the Lords supreme commandment to love the other, the stranger, as ourselves. We all have opportunities to do this in our communities. In today’s gospel Jesus invites the disciples to come and see where he lives. He welcomes them into his home and they stay with him for the rest of the day. The example of Jesus encourages us to be welcoming, to extend a warm invitation, and to spend time with others in friendship. Tríona Doherty

New Bishop of Ossory
We would like to congratulate Monsignor Dermot Farrell as the new Bishop of the diocese of
Ossory. We wish him well in his new Position

World Day of the Sick Sunday
11th February 2018
To Mary, Mother of tender love, we wish to entrust all those who are ill in body and soul, that she may sustain them in hope. We ask her also to help us to be welcoming to our sick brothers and sisters. The Church knows that she requires a special grace to live up to her evangelical task of serving the sick. May our prayers to the Mother of God see us united in an incessant plea that every member of the Church may live with love the vocation to serve life and health. May the Virgin Mary intercede for this Twenty-sixth World Day of the Sick; may she help the sick to experience their suffering in communion with the Lord Jesus; and may she support all those who care for them. To all, the sick, to healthcare workers and to volunteers, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing. Pope Francis

Ministers of the Word and Eucharist
New Rotas are available in the Sacristies. Please collect them at your convenience.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
A directive has come from the Bishop that due to the very serious outbreak of influenza at this time, it is now advisable that, for the next three months, we discontinue exchanging peace by the shaking of hands at Mass. An alternative method of exchanging peace is to use the custom of bowing to the other person, or to simply pause and pray for peace.
The handshake represents a low risk of spreading virus, but if people are uncomfortable about it, they can also use a smile or a bow. Those with flu symptoms are dispensed from their Sunday obligation to attend Mass. In such cases these people can honour the Lords Day by praying along with the Mass broadcast by Parish Radio, on Parish webcams.
SHARING THE CHALICE It is also strongly recommended we stop sharing the chalice at Mass at this time due to the flu. This is a far more easy way of spreading flu/ colds than handshaking. At this time, we would recommend that those who cannot receive the hosts come forward to the Altar with the Extraordinary Ministers after the Our Father is prayed, and receive the low gluten hosts available in both churches.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS
We would remind all Extraordinary Ministers for their safety to wash their hands before and after Masses as usual.
We thank our parishioners for their understanding and the Parish Council will continue to monitor this situation.

Faithful Service

Last weekend, Phyllis Brett retired from the many ministries she performed so diligently and faithfully over the past number of years.  Phyllis wore many hats – she looked after the Altar linen, dressed the Altar, prepared the Altar for Mass, counted the envelopes each week, made sure the relevant colours and frontal of the various seasons were in order.  For such dedicated, committed and loyal service we say a big thank you.  Phyllis has been the driving force of the Sacristy/Sanctuary energy over the past few years. I am not so sure her enthusiasm, loyalty and commitment will rest for too long.  In the meantime enjoy the break Phyllis, and thanks.

We welcome into the Christian Faith Community of St Mary’s, Theo Patrick Carroll who was baptised last weekend.  We congratulate his parents, Greg and Cassandra, godparents, grandparents and extended family.

Wedding Bells:  Congratulations to Mark Ralph Taylor and Celina Brigid Phelan who were married in Holycross Abbey last week.

Congratulations also to Brendan Hickey and Kim Conway who got married in Albufeira, Portugal recently.

We wish both couples many years of married happiness and togetherness.
